讲座摘要:
Taking a broad look at the current state of research and practice on autonomy in language teaching and language teacher education, this seminar will revisit the notion of learner-centred teaching as a core practical concept in autonomy. Historically, the idea of autonomy grew out of the idea of learner-centredness and has now largely replaced it. But the idea of learner-centred teaching remains useful because it best describes the kind of teaching that will help learners become more autonomous. After explaining what I mean by ‘learner-centred’, I will comment on an important distinction between teaching that is focused on teachers’ assessments of learners’ needs and teaching that encourages learners’ learners to direct their own learning. I will conclude by outlining some practical principles to guide student teachers and early-career teachers in their efforts to make their teaching more learner-centred.
